Trying to build a home on $1.82 an hour...

Last year, I set a goal to raise $800 to help a family build a home in a very improvished community in the Dominican Repubilc. While the experience had a lasting effect on me, it completely changed one family's entire life. Together we raised $9,083, enough to build an entire home for one family.

My emotions on the occasion were best summed up in this video, recorded upon learning that we had done it.

Because of the contrabutions from someone just like you, that family went from:

Let me give you a little background. In the six years I've worked for Rustic Pathways I've spent time in communities big and small, near and far. The people in those communities have had a profound impact on me, but none has made an impact quite as profound as those in Batey Monte Coca. Monte Coca is a kind, welcoming community made up of agricultural workers and their families who sustain themselves by harvesting sugarcane. The work is backbreaking and the wage is about $1.82 an hour.

In the simplest terms I'm trying to build a home there. Not a home for myself, rather one for a family without one. It's a project that's very close to my heart.

The exploitative practices of large sugar cane producers in the Dominican Republic is well-documented, but the mistreatment of laborers continues today. The community's top priority is to provide safe and dignified living spaces for its families. It costs a mere $8000 to build a brand new home for a family in Monte Coca. With your help, I know that we can improve the quality of life for the people there by doing just that!

Help me support the people of Monte Coca by making a donation to The Rustic Pathways Foundation. If we can raise $8,000 that’s one more home and one less family without one. The process is fast, easy, and secure. I truly appreciate any support you can provide. It will benefit a great cause!

If you can't make a donation at this point, help me reach my goal by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter! Or, even better, send an e-mail to friends you think might be interested in contributing and include a link to this page!

Thanks so much for your generosity!
